STEADY RHYTHM
About Alvyn
Alvyn Tay
Founder of Steady Rhythm
I am based in Singapore, where I write, develop and facilitate Steady Rhythm — a developing body of work concerned with how we live, interpret our experiences and participate in the conditions shaping our lives.
My work begins with a simple observation: we can spend years fulfilling responsibilites, making decisions and responding to circumstances without always examining what is shaping the way we live.
Steady Rhythm grew from my attempt to understand this more carefully.
Where the inquiry began
For much of my adult life, I moved between work, family responsibilities and the expectations that accompany them.
Like many people, I learned to keep going, make adjustments and attend to what needed to be done.
In 2023, my mother's illness brought a different kind of attention to everyday life.
As our family navigated her care, I began noticing things I had previously accepted without much examination — how responsibilities accumulate, how our circumstances influence our choices, and how easily we become accustomed to ways of living that we have seldom questioned.
Her passing in 2025 did not bring these questions to an end.
Instead, they became the beginning of a more deliberate inquiry into life itself.
From personal questions to public work
Over time, I began recognising that many of the questions occupying my attention were not mine alone.
How do we carry responsibilities without losing sight of ourselves?
How much of the way we live comes from deliberate choices, and how much has been shaped by circumstances, expectations and habits?
What deserves our attention before we decide that something needs to change?
These questions gradually led to Steady Rhythm.
The work brings together observations of biological, environmental and social rhythms, alongside the interpretations through which we understand our experiences.
At its centre is life inquiry — a practice of examining what we encounter more precisely, reconsidering what we have come to assume, and choosing how we wish to participate next.
I continue to develop this work through writing, conversations, observation and practice.
My role
I do not approach this work as someone who has resolved the difficulties of living or discovered a particularly way of life that others should follow.
My role is to develop, articulate and share the practice of life inquiry, and to facilitate conversations in which people can learn to examine their own experiences more carefully.
This may involve asking questions, offering observations, introducing distinctions or examining assumptions together.
The intention is not for people to depend on my interpretations, but to become increasingly capable of conducting their own inquiries.
Steady Rhythm remains a developing body of work. Its ideas and methods will continue to be examined, refined and tested through participation.
An invitation
Steady Rhythm began with questions arising from my own life. I have chosen to share them because I believe they deserve a place in our everyday conversations.
Nhớ, the first movement of the Steady Rhythm Prelude, is one way of beginning.
You may also bring a question or situation from your own life into a guided inquiry.
There is no particular way of living that you need to adopt, and no conclusion that you are expected to reach.
The invitation is simply to begin examining life with greater attention, and to discover what that examination may ask of you.
